On Thursday, February 26, Governor Masuzoe welcomed the Duke of Cambridge, who is making his first visit to Japan.

The governor and the Duke of Cambridge boarded a boat at Haneda Airport in Ota Ward, and over the course of the ride to Hama-Rikyu Gardens in Chuo Ward, the governor showed and gave an explanation on the planned venue sites for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the policies of Tokyo. Arriving at Hama-Rikyu, they then toured the Japanese-style gardens and took part in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Afterwards, the governor said, "Although the weather was unfortunate, I believe that Prince William enjoyed himself, and he seemed thankful for the experience. The Prince was very cordial and kind. He graciously spoke to most of the children who gathered to greet him at Hama-Rikyu. I am very pleased to have been able to discuss a variety of topics with him. I explained to Prince William that we are conducting an ongoing review of the venue plan for the 2020 Games, and that we have firmed up plans to begin construction on several facilities. The Prince then commented that he was certain that the Tokyo 2020 Games would be a success. I was very pleased to have been given the opportunity to show him the attractions of the Tokyo waterfront."
