On Friday, July 24, Governor Masuzoe attended the unveiling ceremony for the emblems of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Speaking at the event, the governor said, “I hope the emblems we introduce today will raise anticipation for the Games and remain in people’s memories long after 2020, just as the emblem for the 1964 Games held in Tokyo did. Our decision to announce the Olympic emblem and Paralympic emblem at the same time shows that Tokyo strongly believes the Olympics and Paralympics are one. We will mobilize all our resources to promote barrier-free efforts in the areas of infrastructure, the mindset of the people, and access to information to stage the best-ever Paralympics, paving the way to a society where people can enjoy life regardless of whether they have a disability. Under these new emblems, we will advance, in a united effort across Japan, toward the grand goal of making the 2020 Games a success.”
The two emblems were designed based on the same concept. The Olympic emblem features the letter T, which represents “Tokyo,” “team,” and “tomorrow,” while the Paralympic emblem is based on the universal symbol for the equality—the equal sign.
