Major cities of the world jointly issue communiqué to G20 leaders
2019 Urban 20 Tokyo Mayors Summit concludes

As chair of the 2019 Urban 20 (U20) Tokyo Mayors Summit, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the summit on May 22, 2019. At the summit’s close, cities issued the following communiqué as a message to the G20.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, along with other representatives, including the Governing Mayor of Berlin and Mayor of Rome, delivered the communiqué to Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, which holds 2019 G20 Presidency, on behalf of U20 shortly following the summit.

Number of signatories: 30 cities (full list of signatories follows the Communique)

Number of attendees: Approx. 250
Number of cities represented: 26 (Including Tokyo)
An additional 9 cities attended as observers.

Urban 20 (U20) Overview

  • The U20 is a new city diplomacy initiative developed by the Mayors of Buenos Aires and Paris (Chair of the C40 Group), in collaboration with the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) on December 12, 2017.
  • Based on the recognition that cities play an important role in creating a sustainable and inclusive world, the U20 aims to reflect experience and expertise of the cities in the G20 discussions.
  • Tokyo joined the U20 on January 24, 2018. While Japan serves as the chair country for the 2019 G20 Summit, Tokyo will be hosting the U20 Mayors Summit.
