The Torch Relay will tour all of Tokyo’s 62 municipalities over a period of 15 days from before the Tokyo 2020 Games up to the Commencement of the Opening Ceremony.
The Relay will start from the Central Square of Komazawa Olympic Park, a venue of the 1964 Games, which straddles Setagaya-ku and Meguro-ku.
The first part of the Relay, up to July 17, will take place mainly in the Tama Area and Islands. From July 18 until the final date of the Relay, the torch will travel through the special ward area, and end its journey at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.
In the first half of the relay, the torch will visit the Tama Area, which offers both abundant nature and urban convenience. Torchbearers will run through various places across southern Tama, where initiatives to revitalize Tama New Town are in progress, western Tama, where vast forests and mountains and fresh streams such as Tama River are found, and northern Tama, where hills and other natural environs spread out around residential areas.
In addition, the flame will be transported across all towns and villages in the Tokyo Islands, from the Izu Islands to the World Heritage site of the Ogasawara Islands, a “treasure trove” of spectacular landscapes, marine resources, and local specialties.
The latter half of the relay will tour various spots in the special ward area, including Japan’s economic and commercial centers of Ginza and Nihombashi, the leading entertainment area of Roppongi, and the skyscraper district of Shinjuku.
